BLOG POST 1 : INTENT OF MY AUTHORSHIP

1

I intend to practically explore film poster art. I will be using many hand rendered techniques of mark making and print making that I have gained expertise and confidence with since my time on the foundation course. I will be using monoprint techniques, ( such as wipe-away monoprints, and monotype), block printing such as Lino and woodblock, hard and soft ground etching and screen printing. I am an avid printmaker and draughtsman and this self driven, and this unit of authorship is vital for both the development of my practice and for my mental health- being in the print room at University gives me a real feeling of joy, and happiness. This Unit is for me and it will be a combination of the two best and most enjoyable projects so far on the course: The print project and the film poster project. I have hand picked a selection of sci-fi films that I identify with on a personal and emotional level. I will be creating a plethora of printmaking, drawing and poster work that will push me to be experimental, ambitious and innovative. I hope to have a portfolio of work at the end of this unit that I can enter into drawing competitions, poster competitions, gallery exhibits and print fairs.

Having been pent up over lockdown and during the CP3 writing, I want to just go full tilt and just make and create. Be ambitious by setting a lot of films to make posters of, really push myself.

My CP3 essay (which focussed on the pioneering poster art of Czech and Polish artists of the 60s, 70s and 80s) will act as an accompanying piece of literature. With my poster work created during this unit and the cp3 essay, I hope to raise awareness for the arguably lost tradition of poster art being made by commissioned, talented draughtsmen and printmakers - with an emphasis on the poster design being idiosyncratic, maverick and fresh.

I intend to focus my research and practice towards becoming a more accomplished and experienced printmaker and draughtsman - and developing a portfolio of work that I can show off, and present in print fairs, galleries, in interviews for master courses, becoming a print technician; even perhaps to become the next commissioned film poster artist for a theatre or cinema. My aim is to evolve my practice and celebrate a more idiosyncratic, maverick and intuitive approach to my visual practice.

-Main idea is to create work for myself, to be selfish and to massively distance myself from becoming commercialised and let my style and way of working be dictated by an avaricious team.

My creative practice including: drawing, printmaking and collage will play a gargantuan role in reinforcing my creative intention of the work and my ideas. I will frequent the print room and take the words of John Hewitt from first year as inspiration, saying that he practically 'lived in the print room' during his degree. I will immerse myself in that room and constantly engage with the print technicians (who I have become so close with during my time at University) and constantly ask questions, being inquisitive and soaking up all the knowledge and experience. I have just booked myself on an intensive Lithography course induction course which I will start next week (23rd Nov onwards). - Another printmaking technique that I can add to my arsenal and incorporate in my poster designs. I aim to be totally engaged in print.

I will use reflection, evaluation, self editing and critique as I work through this authorship unit - to help in producing a body of work that is well thought through and of a high quality. In addition, I will be using my peers from the course who I live with to help critique my work and share my ideas with. Furthermore, the connection I have made with the Polish poster designer Andrzej Klimowski through the CP3 essay is something I will use for this unit. I hope to send some of my poster designs and prints to Klimowski and ask for some critical, constructive feedback. I will also seek critique and reflection from not only my personal tutor, but also the staff in the print room who I have learnt not only provide critical feedback but also offer alternatives, solutions and references.

The process of self editing and reflection was something that was lacking up until the middle of Second year, however; through the poetry project, I placed emphasis and importance heavily upon editing my work and refining it- being critical. This paid off immeasurably and I will continue to do this for this Unit.

I am currently reading through a selection of purchased and borrowed library books on printmaking and poster design (pictures of these books are in the section of this blog entitled: 'Extra Reading and Research'. I will also be looking back over the books, articles and websites that I used for CP3 research to help inform my practice for this authorship unit.

AMBITIONS

A ; Making Prints / Drawings / Zines for your degree show – for fairs / Gallery submissions – competitions

Small press authorship. This path is a Career choice too as a more balanced Graphic Arts career ££

work /life balance / and not as hard core as ( C ) ;

B ; Aiming your work toward an M.A post grad education pathway –  perhaps looking at teaching as a profession £ – all ages ?

via PGCE  post grad  / Or arts therapy MA – placements ? societal community work

C ; Preparing for IWA editorial / media Industry / Publishing / Live jobs - aiming to tune a Professional Portfolio aimed at

Gaining employment within the Design industry / media / this may be a freelance career / a real day job etc -

It may require eventually Seeking an agent – going solo – this is ££ business

- In response to this list of goals/career pathways, I strongly believe that I fit into category A, however, on further inspection, I would merge both A and B. Aside from my ardour  for printmaking and drawing, I do enjoy education and teaching others - An MA course and becoming a print technician are well within my sights and will have both of these options in mind throughout the rest of this course- I hope to talk to the print room staff at University about the possibility of working as a technician part or full time and I will ask my personal tutor about the possibility of an MA course.

- I strongly feel that my abilities and ways of working are not suitable for category C. Although I admire the illustrators who work in these industries, I would not want to be altering my work to suit the demands of a company or audience - although I am aware this is a necessary means of producing money (to conform to the aesthetic of the contemporary audience) , I would relish having a side job that funds my creative practice.
