BLOG POST 7: ANNIHILATION

ANNIHILATION (2018) Dir. Alex Garland

Annihilation is a fantastic Ecological horror that has reminiscent features of Tarkowsky’s ‘Stalker’ and key themes such as Lovelock’s Gaia theory and how we are all intrinsically connected to nature. I feel I successfully captured the atmosphere of human physiology as it mutates with nature, utilising colour and texture to portray the grotesque and feminine as opposing, yet harmonising, elements.

Notes about the film

Scary, ecological horror

Has elements of Roadside Picnic, Stalker (the zone is in this case 'Area X') Alien contact with earth having effects on the ecosystem, habitats, genetic makeup of fauna and flora.

Also has elements of the Blair Witch project with a dense, jungle that distorts any sense of time, reality, lack of bearings. The 'Shimmer' interferes with polarity and time.

Big Forests with shimmering, refracted light.

Colour palette - spectrum of colours like a petrol spill or on the surface of a soap bubble, psychedelic.

Alterations and combinations of genes/DNA, flora and fauna combining, elements of biophilia and refer to Lovelock's Gaia theory.

Forest combination with the beautiful sky phenomena created by the 'Shimmer' in Area X

Rewilding, nature reclaiming urbanised areas. Chernobyl, Mother nature > technology.

Artist references relevant to the film/my thoughts on poster design and outcomes: Munch

My CMYK Freehand monoprint drawings

Key layer of main drawing will be a dark maroon/warm grey instead of a strong pure black. This will add a certain femininity which should resonate very well with this film - strong female protagonists.

Multi-layered CMYK colour monoprints to act as a substitute for layered silk-screen printing.
